Look up Alfred McCoy (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Politics_of_Heroin_in_Southeast_Asia), for starters. The latest edition of his book has updated info that includes the same policies implemented recently in Afghanistan. Very sober voices have suggested that we may still be in A-stan simply to protect the profits the drug trade is making the CIA, profits which the agency can then spend elsewhere without Congressional oversight.
