There is one misterious phenomenon which I would like to clarify. This is the Russian Mafia.

All my life I lived in Russia, I am Russian, and I do know thousands russians of different generations, but I have never seen anything looking like Mafia that I saw in the Italian TV series La piovra. Mighty criminal organization with combat troops killing and racketeering the business and not being a government herewith.

I hear about the Russian mafia from all foreigners with whom I meet, I read about it in foreign newspapers, I see a program about it on television and in movies, but the most similar to the mafia in Russia that I saw were street gangs racketeering small shops in the early 90 's. Since then all of these people have either died or are engaged in activities which the society considers legal.

I would like to ask a respected community members to explain to me what is the Russian mafia, which everyone is afraid. Because maybe it's time to get scared for me as well!

"I'm an honest businessman. Just never ask me about the origin of my first million". -- a local proverb here.

The local mafioso of New Orleans was a "simple tomato farmer" who got all his money from friends.

Our mafiosi usually get their millions through saving coins from eating less breakfast. They start the saving process as early as elementary school. It keeps them in good shape AND they save millions. Win-win.

It's funny, a friend of mine distinctly remembers the leader of a local criminal group in Hartford, CT for the quality of his garden's fresh tomatoes.

Yep. I've always been of the impression that it's about immigrant cultures (in the US), not the country of origin.

I was told I could find the Russian mafia if I used this map.

They don't even really need to be Russian, just from the area. Anyone who sounds sinister when they say "moose and squirrel" and is involved in crime is just assumed to be part of the Russian mob.

You may know Brighton Beach. It is a part of contemporary Russian pop culture. It was mentioned in popular russian movie Brother II. The main character of the movie bought a car in Brighton.

And why do you ask? Do you suspect that we, fair Russians, can have problems with the Russian Mafia myth?

They do not distinguish us on the basis of nationality or religion. If you are from Russia and speak russian, then you are russian. Notice that they differ Russians and Ukrainians.

The Russian mafia in the sense of God Father is a myth, but not russian criminals in general. But we can't fight it. The image of russians that was fostered by the media is too sinister. Russian in America can protest against the depicting of russian in movies as a cruel psychopath. That will eventually solve the problem of russian mafia.

In spite of widespread denials from Colombian officials throughout the summer of 2000, events in Peru later confirmed MSNBC.com's story, ultimately bringing down the government of Peruvian President Fujimori."

There is one mysterious phenomenon which I would like to clarify. This is the Al Qaeda.

All my life I lived in Iceland, England and Switzerland (and briefly France). And I do know dozens of Arabs and Pakistanis of different generations, but I have never seen anything looking like Al Qaeda that I saw on the CNN reports in 2001.

I hear about Al Qaeda from all foreigners who I meet, I read about it in the foreign newspapers, I see programs about it on television and in movies, but the most similar thing to Al Qaeda that I saw in Switzerland were street protests against the minaret ban. Since then all of these people have either shut up or gone about their business which the society considers legal.

I would like you, respected Russian friend, to explain to me what is Al Qaeda that everyone is afraid of. Maybe you'd manage to get me scared as well?

So you've seen some russians, none of them were mafia. You've also seen some mafiosos, and none of them were russians. Ergo, there is no russian mafia.

Hmmmn....In the USA I would say that one could follow around / make friends with that single Russian girl surviving all on her own (with no family) - and eventually you will meet a Russian man likely member of some organized crime. Hate to say it but the sex trade is big stuff, and, yeah, it's made its way into the USA too :(

"The NATO charter clearly says that any attack on a NATO member shall be treated, by all members, as an attack against all. So that means that, if we attack Greenland, we'll be obligated to go to war against ... ourselves! Gee, that's scary. You really don't want to go to war with the United States. They're insane!"
