Ok, so I'm here asking you for help.
Crowd-sourcing, if you will.

Many months ago, I made a charity-bet with a member of this comm about whether Occupy Wall Street would have an event that got over 8,500 people to show by May1. The precise details of this bet were never too clear; however, the lose gives $20 to charity. If OWS doesn't gather 8,500 by May1 I pay up to an animal shelter in Chicago, if OWS does, this member gives $20 to Planned Parenthood.

May1 has come and past, and by God, there were large crowds on May1. But it is surprisingly difficult to find a way to count the crowd sizes. (this also requires that the individual I bet with is willing to include May1 in our bet; the language when we spoke, I think, was somewhat vague; was it before May1 or was it before May1 was over?)

I saw some fairly massive crowd shots from the NYC OWS marches. Heard it stretched for 15 blocks at some points. The OWS twitter-feed at one point told folks that the crowd was 30,000 people big. Now, even I, supportive as I am of OWS, acknowledge that they aren't unbiased and that they might have been playing up just how big it was.

Yet, finding reliable sources that give estimates of how big the marches were is, as I said, difficult. So here I am, asking all y'all to help.

Play for your favorite team, if you like, I'll bet there are news stories on both sides of this one.
So, help? Maybe you can make me lose some cash, or maybe you can help fund Planned Parenthood.

...GO!

Hardly a surprise. There must be enough room for goalpost-manoeuvring afterwards!

To your question: ask Fox News! They know the One and Only, Unabridged and Fair Truth. And they'll be sure to serve it to you without any bias and spin!

Is the requirement 8500 protesters at one location, or 8500 total throughout the country? There were well over 100 Occupy protests for May Day. Numbers from SF are reported here: http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/g/a/2012/05/01/bloomberg_articlesM3CGZL6S972901-M3CR0.DTL

I'm pretty sure it was more than that. A lot more.

Well, I have no source, but the pictures I saw looked like more than 8k. If the bet is 8k for any one gathering, NYC is your best bet. If the bet is for 8k nationwide, you absolutely win the bet.

Numbers games never work in real life. They can't be proven, and you will always, always, find some crackpot engaging in blatant lies and plenty of gullible suckers who'll listen to him and never accept he's a blatant liar even if shown articles where he's claiming the sky is green.

My first thought was cursing at myself that I may have roped myself into another bet I can't quite afford at the moment, then I realized that I have no interest in Chicago-area animal shelters.

Anyway, a few points of order:

* If it was "by May 1," you lose as, technically, May 1 is after by.

* How much of the Marxist/socialist/anarchist May day demonstrating are you counting with OWS here? Are we assuming a nebulous "99%" on this?

The Atlantic (http://www.theatlanticwire.com/national/2012/05/happy-may-day-occupys-first-arrests-are-trickling/51772/) likes the 8000 number, and I would personally consider them trustworthy on this issue.

I can't find anything that I'd consider truly reliable.

Police said 3,500 for the night time crowd which seemed about 1/4 the size of the daytime crowd.

The only citations say "thousands".

I can't find a citation. Its just "thousands" in sfgate and oakland tribune. I didn't get there until around 6:30 though, sorry.

Does it have to be usa? I know there were huge rallies in spain and greece.

From 6:30 to about 9:30, but then I had to tend to doggies and the oakland cops were getting completely insanely thuggish, so I split.

I say both of you pay $20 and everyone will be happy :D

(un)related question. On May 1st I saw part of the protest under the NYT building on 8th Ave. Drumgs, sings, banners, marching - the whole nine yards. But they were waving just two flags - a black flag (assuming for anarchy and not pirates) and the "Betsy Ross" flag. Any idea how the two combine or what symbolism the betsy ross flag has for OWS?

Yeah the one with 13 stars in a circle. Well at 8:30am there were about 40 people - they barely took up half a block and not too dense since people were passing through the crowd. They also had a red banner that had title "Legal-something" and ended in "Association". I was running late to work due so didn't have time to stop or cross the street to take a closer look. Just the two flags caught my attention.

Oooh I know. I've heard complaints from my friends at FRBNY and MTA HQ. :D

I wasn't commenting on size or anything - I was just curious about the combination of anarchist flag and american revolution flag flying side by side.

My friend who is currently out there with them claims 30k, but I think he's biased and is going with the high end reporting. It might easily be over 8k. You just have to figure out where the date cutoff lies. ;)

Let it ride on....

1) either candidate mentioning OWS in the first debate.

2) Romney picking a VP with a net worth over/under 15 million.

3) the Astros

4) wing eating contest

5) odd and even horses in the Derby

DAILY QUOTE:
"The NATO charter clearly says that any attack on a NATO member shall be treated, by all members, as an attack against all. So that means that, if we attack Greenland, we'll be obligated to go to war against ... ourselves! Gee, that's scary. You really don't want to go to war with the United States. They're insane!"
