Why Internet Commenters Will Eventually End The World

It means that the future leaders of your country ... are gonna be people that have absolutely no experience with actual confrontation. Thirty years from now the President of the most powerful country in the world is going to be some little shit who sat at his computer and hurled insults three feet away from his mommy's tit like it was no big deal. I don't condone fighting, but when a human being understands that his or her actions might result in a giant fist up his or her ass, he or she learns a thing or two about acting before they speak.

This is at the end of the link. Read the rest if you want, but it's not relevant to the question. (This is the opposite of what I normally post, btw.)

The question is what do you think of this assertion? Does it seem reasonable to you or not? For discussions sake, ignore the question of whether the president will be someone from a rich family who never used a computer or something like that. I'm really only interested in the final claim as it relates to people in general.

I think it's obviously true, but I wanted to check and see whether others had a different opinion.

I was too busy watching the video of the cat with ham on his head (http://www.funnyordie.com/videos/f5bad2e7ca/cat-vs-ham?rel=featured) but I have to say that you're making a ridiculous assertion.

Angry/confrontational people find other outlets besides calling people Big Poopy-heads on the internet. Retail management is my chosen field because I not only get to browbeat staff but also the public. Win-win.

It'll never happen. My parents were afraid POTUS would be some stoner with long hair and a beard. I predict the future president will not be someone who's had helicopter parents sending out his resume while he was a fetus; Who's had her self-esteem pumped up to the point where they can't possibly fail. These people are destined for mediocrity.

It's bull. You can't become president by never dealing with confrontation in the real world. You know, like in a *debate*.

Most political candidates are either lawyers (in which case their entire job is managed confrontation) or businessmen (where competition is a vital part of the job). Unless this somehow changes, I doubt the fact that the Internet lets us argue politics from a distance will matter.

I think the other commenters are on to something here. The POTUS cannot be one of these whiny and socially inept idiot savants simply because campaigning will toughen you or kill you. Even the most soft-balled CNN "debate" (no answers that cannot be considered sound bites, please) will show enough confrontation to melt one's internet screen comfort zone.

Ah, but what of others? You know, like bureaucratic functionaries? You know, like the folks we can't pull from office?

That is an interesting question. Our future may hang not on the hard-headedness of our elected officials, but on the zeitgeist backing their advisors in the specialist fields.

Interesting.

Only to a certain extent: the "Sir Humphreys"* have to establish a modicum of competence before they are promoted beyond it.

I think that dad was angry and talked out of his ass, just like people do on the internet often.
It's impossible to get into politics and get anywhere without experiencing real confrontation and without knowing something tiny about consequences.

Just about everyone has done some dumb shit when they were a kid, I'm not sure why presidential candidates are exempt from that.

"These Kids today! I don't know!"

Repeated through the ages.

Simply because internet commentary creates a possibility for consequence free confrontation, it does remove all possibility of good old fashioned IRL face to face confrontation. The vast majority of people who interact on the internet still have to also interact in real life. They will go to school with other kids. They will ride the bus. They will get jobs where they work with people, They will eat in restaurants, They will walk in public places. Unless we hypothesize all these things magically disappearing, the asertion fails, as it assumes facts not in evidence, to wit "are gonna be people that have absolutely no experience with actual confrontation".

Experience with X does not, in and of itself, preclude experience with NOT X.

Exactly. Although the internet allows some of us to behave in ways that we never would IRL we still have to learn how to be a part of regular society and learn all the social skills and confrontation techniques that come from that. Someone who doesn't interact with the public at all or never learns this is not the type of person who is going to be president.

It's beyond me why would someone have to have gone through fist fights in order to know the intricacies of high politics.

Also, chances are higher that rich people would've used a computer.

"The NATO charter clearly says that any attack on a NATO member shall be treated, by all members, as an attack against all. So that means that, if we attack Greenland, we'll be obligated to go to war against ... ourselves! Gee, that's scary. You really don't want to go to war with the United States. They're insane!"
