Greetings again, with our umpteenth installment of grotesquely oversimplified hypothetical situations taken from the [Poll #1835520]

As always, the answers have been made to sound extreme for a reason (although I forgot what it was).

Emotionally, #1 is the obvious choice.

Rationally, #3 is the obvious choice.

As such, my first inclination is to go with mr. tabloid journalist. That said there are numerous factors that have not been discussed.

How stable does the new government appear to be? just how close were/are your ties to the prior regime? Can you expect any assistance rendered today to be reciprocated in future? Do you owe somebody a favor?

Not the guys who told Saddam they wouldn't interfere (http://www.chss.montclair.edu/english/furr/glaspie.html) if he attacked Kuwait, and then interfered when he attacked Kuwait.

#2 is the way to go. If they don't listen then you can bomb the shit out of them anyway and say "Hey, we tried to be reasonable..."

Since the leader of the coup is a guy from our country, we are responsible for doing something about him, which may or may not do something about the coup as well.

To me, number two seems the correct choice because it's the only one that allows you to stall for time before having to commit to a path. From two you can choose to go to one or three, or continue on two, but it doesn't seem that you can reverse course from one or three nearly so easily. So I think two is not necessarily a good choice (although it might be depending on the situation and has proved so in the past), but the diplomatic option of mild condemnation preserves all your other options for the near future. You can choose to continue being diplomatic or switch tracks if the situation is swinging in some other direction.

I would prefer one to three honestly, simply because I don't want to be held responsible for any mess that Ho Chi Bush creates. Also, I don't like ex-generals overthrowing other countries...sometimes they like coming home.

What about the pre-9/11 option?: Spend a few days on vacation cutting up firewood with a chainsaw at your ranch in Backwaterstan.

I'm sorry, I can't really back any of these.

I choose to side with King Bumi and follow a course of neutral Jing.

We do........

Nothing.

Over time if this new government has or attains the support of the people then the situation will resolve itself.

If it lacks and fails to gain such support they will be replaced by yet another coup, a process which will repeat until a leader who is able to attract sufficient support takes over and again the situation resolves itself.

Any attempt to interviene on our part will only lead to resentment and charges of interfering in local sovereignty rendering said interference counterproductive.

So in that vein, we issue a curt statement that our friendship remains as always with the people of whereverstan regardless of who currently holds the reins of power and they have our best wishes in these trying times and then let that be the end of the matter.

DAILY QUOTE:
"The NATO charter clearly says that any attack on a NATO member shall be treated, by all members, as an attack against all. So that means that, if we attack Greenland, we'll be obligated to go to war against ... ourselves! Gee, that's scary. You really don't want to go to war with the United States. They're insane!"
