You might actually be on firmer ground in France. I know that they've got a wholly different theory of IP law, which says that it exists not for the purposes of society (getting creativity that feeds into the public domain) but for the purposes of the author - IP law is seen as an inherent right of the author. But then, that was a very broad statement made by an American professor, so I have no idea how good it is.
