Changing Tides

Change is such hard work. - Billy Crystal

Just in time for the end of utopia month (or maybe a little late), I thought I would add a few of my philosophical musings about its antithesis, dystopia. I call it An American Prayer.

After September 11, 2001, our world had changed. I think everybody recognizes that. A few of my thoughts on this:

· We prayed to the gods of war that we may drink the blood of our enemies. We suffer a loss of blood and treasure that exceeded our original outrage.

· We prayed to the gods of wealth that we may be a land of plenty. We suffer the loss of fortune that our generation had never known.

· We prayed to the gods of wisdom that we may know the answers and solutions to our troubles. We suffer irreconcilable discord.

· We prayed to the gods of commerce that we may prosper and be productive. We have stagnated with no end in sight, filling only the coffers of the greedy.

· We prayed to the gods of our fathers that they may vanquish the infidels. Only to find we are the infidels ourselves.

Who says prayer doesn’t make a difference?

Let the rant quest begin.

Pray for intercession from Jobs, who's gone to the Post-Warranty Genius Desk Assistant to have his customer experience optimized for all time.

Ah, nonsense. We treated a terrorist attack as though it were far worse than it was, and then we wound up unintentionally doing for Iran what it would never have done for itself. The War on (some specific regional-ideological varieties of) Terrorism was an imperial venture that has ended badly. It's not the end of the world, we are at least able to actually end the damned thing instead of deciding to perpetuate it forever like our European predecessors in imperialism did.

In fact, if I were to be far more cynical than this OP, I'd say that the USA in the War on (some regional-ideological varieties of) Terrorism has shown precisely why it's no longer able to act unilaterally-it always and forever claims that issues which are not of world-shattering importance are of said importance. As a result instead of reacting rationally to the situation in front of it, the USA seeks solutions for a problem that does not exist, against enemies it does not understand, its credibility shot, its economic overburden to the rest of the world cracking step by step.

The USA has never understood that so long as it claims that what in reality are perfectly justifiable things in a lesser context are treated as existential wars for the survival of human civilization its credibility dwindles. As a bunch of thugs waving AK-47s shoot at it and reduce its psychological-military advantages it has to increasingly revert back to Massive Retaliation on the one hand or start removing some of its empire of bases on the other hand. The USA frankly put does not have the political or military maturity for empire but is under the impression that it does have it.

This isn't a case of "half full" vs "half empty" but more there are no drops left at the bottom of your glass.

What I mean is that as humans we dont say "yay that was a great period of growth we managed there. We managed bigger economic structure than any other country, ever" we mourn for our loss,no matter how inevitable or unsustainable the situation.

Let us not forget that before 9/11, many Americans prayed for the destruction of New York and Big Government. The attacks seemed like answers to their prayers.

I was sitting on a plane the day after 9/11, reading the paper, and thinking: I can sense how this could become
really really bad, fast, but also how it could avoid that.
And then I realized the powerlessness of the single human, and the strength of hurt and rage, and sort of knew
it would become really bad.

DAILY QUOTE:
"The NATO charter clearly says that any attack on a NATO member shall be treated, by all members, as an attack against all. So that means that, if we attack Greenland, we'll be obligated to go to war against ... ourselves! Gee, that's scary. You really don't want to go to war with the United States. They're insane!"
