Terrorist groups make an example of one group, in order to try and scare the ever-loving shit and custard out of the other groups. If they feel they have not obtained their goal (and since the cease-fire is not a good indicator that they've scared the shit out of everybody), then they will make an example out of another group, until they've subdued any resistance.
My objection with Hamas is that they fail to respect common decency. Period.
And don't think that I'm a huge apologist for Israel (I still haven't forgiven them for the leaking of US secrets to the Soviets); I just feel that they are the lesser threat of the two.
I don't think that the US should get involved; I think that the UN needs to take care of Hamas as they would any terrorist organization.
Also, your example made its point. Personally, I'd use my kids as a cheap alternative to turkey for Thanksgiving. That'll teach the little bastards.
