I swear North Korea's going out of its way to be a timewarped relic right out of the old-school Communist states. The personality cult, the leaving the embalmed bodies of its dead leaders as focuses of state ceremonies......this shit was creepy enough in the USSR and China, North Korea preserving it intact is even creepier. I mean seriously, my icon here is the most succint version of my opinion on this ghastly nonsense but I'm curious what you-all think.

$1 million to keep someone preserved a little longer might seem odd, but what else is there to spend money on? Food? Now you're just being silly.

i think it proves that Stalinist Communism is a religion every bit as much as the churches it condemns. A religion where the State functions as a deity, with the "beloved leaders" as saints/heroes (in the ancient Greek sense) complete with holy icons and relics, civil ceremonies and Party meetings as liturgy, and rote revolutionary/nationalistic sloganeering as both prayer and hymn. There's official iconography, blasphemy laws, excommunication, a puritanical streak wrt morals, and a fanatical devotion to maintaining orthodoxy. North Korea is merely the latest, and perhaps most blatant, manifestation of this.

Kind of ancient Egypt-ish.

I heard on the news today that North Korea is punishing people who "mourned insufficiently".

It's just a more blatant version of what every single country does with their "heroes".

What country doesn't? I'm pretty sure Reagan would be bobbing around in a glass of formaldehyde if it wasn't so damn commie :P

Having gone to a few funerals this year and over the years let me tell you, they're keeping all bodies on ice longer and longer. It gives more time to make funeral arrangements, allowing larger congregations to make an appearance the day they're put into the ground. But it also allows funeral homes to charge more, as the longer a body stays on ice, the bigger the fee.

Soo don't get all morally superior and say the embalming of Kim Jong is comparable to Stalin (and Evita). While on one level it is, but viewed through a different spectrum, it's not that foreign of a practice.

JFK was shot Nov 22 1963, and his funeral was 3 days later on Nov 25.

Ronald Reagan June 5, 2004, and his funeral was 7 days later on June 11th.

Gee, just as expected, they're performing "comradely" trials against those who "did not weep enough" during the "weeping week". One might guess where the "non-weepers" will end up. :-S

Many would have paid to see a stuffed Kim Jong Il before he died.

"The NATO charter clearly says that any attack on a NATO member shall be treated, by all members, as an attack against all. So that means that, if we attack Greenland, we'll be obligated to go to war against ... ourselves! Gee, that's scary. You really don't want to go to war with the United States. They're insane!"
