IMHO the most inexcusable thing he said was in the first article when he claimed a 5-year-old with cancer was responsible for his own cancer, and that the government has no business "punishing those that do right for the sake of those that do wrong." With that I think it's fairly clear that Mitt Romney will be the nominee for the Republicans as none of these other people can last five minutes without saying the kind of things that would over-qualify them for entrance in the League of Extraordinary Dumbasses.

G-d forbid, but if either of my parents were suddenly single tomorrow, either of them could be married again basically the very next day. And short of the kind of miracle that make people found new religions, my mother is never going to be responsible for a young child again.

That argument was self defeating in 1993 when I first heard it in the gay marriage debate in Hawai'i, and it has been self defeating every time I have heard it repeated since then. There is nothing about the way that we administer civil marriage in this country that has anything to do with children with the exception that being a married parent means you automatically are assumed to be the child care provider in the event of the death of your spouse. Even the dependent child tax credit has nothing to do with being married.

Why don't these zeebs propose disallowing menopausal women from wedding and require all young couples to take fertility tests prior to marrying if the "privilege" is for the benefit of children?

I tell you what, when Huntsman finally turned the tables on Mitt Romney yesterday over the swipe about serving President Obama as the United States Ambassador to China, it was fantastic. Huntsman was so visibly angry, his eyes were tearing up. And of course Mitt had to say his insult again, and that line Huntsman said in response was PERFECT. And Huntsman has had significant changing in his polling as a result of his debate performances (I don't think it's going to change the outcome unfortunately.)

I wonder if this is because their competition from the "conservative" wing is as poor as it is as opposed to any special skills they have? If the best the conservative wing can do is someone like Rick Perry or Santorum, there's no conspiracy barring them from having a candidate the way their pundits say, it's just their candidates are really, really shitty.

They are, however, the only ones besides Gingrich, who in his own way is just as poor a choice for contemporary conservatives as Romney (not least in that he's advocated policies on a realpolitik basis as opposed to the more ideological standpoint they want). So like I said, Romney's arguably by no means a *good* candidate for the GOP, but if it's a bad candidate or the kind of people who would be drummed out of the official extremist movements for being embarrassments.....

I don't have a dog in this particular race, to be blunt. Obama I see as everything bad with Bush but moreso and in worse ways, Romney's a paler, Mormon Republican Obama-lite, and the other GOP candidates are somewhere on the scale of democratic politicians between Ariel Sharon and Le Pen.

For one thing almost all of Bush's civil liberties abuses have been retained and expanded upon. For another Obama's expansion of the Afghanistan War into Pakistan means that we're technically fighting a war on the borders of another nuclear power, which is not the smartest move given how unstable Pakistan is, and given the immense problems we're facing in Afghanistan alone. Obama's continued several of Bush's evils in foreign policy, and I remember during the Gulf Oil Spill that he was shown to be engaging in the same selective editing of reality that I loathed during Bush's Administration. For all this, if the GOP is dumb enough to nominate someone who's almost the same, I'd rather have Obama than Romney. If they go with Santorum, Gingrich, or Perry all of them are disastrous enough Obama's still more preferable on grounds of how ghastly any of those men would be as POTUS.

I agree, but given that the GOP political focus is Romney or Anybody But Excluding Huntsman.....unfortunately Obama's probably going to coast to another term on nothing but having an opponent so incapable of formulating a coherent, actual policy without appealing to elements who can win primaries but not the general that his second term will be like his first: he does what he wants, spites the base, the GOP foams and raves from the sidelines and looks for conspiracies to avoid having to face its own growing weaknesses. Ironically had they followed Bush II's lead in recruiting Latinos they might well be a serious competitor in the popular vote.
