Court OKs Barring High IQs for Cops

A man whose bid to become a police officer was rejected after he scored too high on an intelligence test has lost an appeal in his federal lawsuit against the city.

The 2nd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in New York upheld a lower court’s decision that the city did not discriminate against Robert Jordan because the same standards were applied to everyone who took the test.

This kind of puts an official face on discrimination in America against people of a certain class,” Jordan said today
from his Waterford home. “I maintain you have no more control over your basic intelligence than your eye color or your gender or anything else.

He said he does not plan to take any further legal action.

Jordan, a 49-year-old college graduate, took the exam in 1996 and scored 33 points, the equivalent of an IQ of 125. But New London police interviewed only candidates who scored 20 to 27, on the theory that those who scored too high could get bored with police work and leave soon after undergoing costly training.

Most Cops Just Above Normal The average score nationally for police officers is 21 to 22, the equivalent of an IQ of 104, or just a little above average.
Jordan alleged his rejection from the police force was discrimination. He sued the city, saying his civil rights were violated because he was denied equal protection under the law.

But the U.S. District Court found that New London had “shown a rational basis for the policy.” In a ruling dated Aug. 23, the 2nd Circuit agreed. The court said the policy might be unwise but was a rational way to reduce job turnover.

Jordan has worked as a prison guard since he took the test.

To me, this is an example of "bottom line" thinking. Someone deemed it is more important to reduce training costs than it is to have a person above average as a police officer. I can see where a detective with a high IQ would thrive. I would argue that people of higher intelligence are a minority. Whether they are a 'protected class' is for the court to decide.

Is this an effort (to cut potential projected maybe it will happen costs), that has gone a bit *too far* in silliness?

Regardless of your conservative position;  liberal, or Indie-NOTAs, Do you agree with the ruling and why or why not?

Which is better for society, average cops or above average cops, when it comes to protecting society in a cost effective manner?

Damn the rising costs of armies of giant killer robots. It's going to take forever to work up enough cash to enslave mankind.

Grammar Nazi Under L sez succinctly but slyly:

Yeah has an -h at the end and genius-level usually has a hyphen. Just as an FYI.

Smart people are less likely to follow orders that they realize will have long-term negative consequences for the organization, therefore, you know, like, that means less fun.

In Queensland, Australia, during the regime of Sir Joh, there was a truism:

Cops traveled in threes.

One who could read.

One who could write.

And one to keep an eye on the two dangerous intellectuals.

A properly structured society must eliminate all but a narrow window. Those who are too dumb are useless, those who are too smart are disruptive.

Cops need to be smart. They need to go to school to learn the law they are being trusted to enforce. Cops get practical training in their side arms, high speed pursuits, dealing with public, etc But they have only a passing familiarity of the law. I'd like to see some intelligent candidates (perhaps even some who have passed the bar) walking the beat, out in patrol cars.

Sounds typical of the smart guy who just looked at the world and said the hell with it.

Why would anyone with high intelligence want to go around enforcing laws, most of which are ineffective and absurd? I think the New London Police Force recognizes this; they don't want philosophers, they want people who follow orders. We have some very smart people in congress and look how fucked up that is.

Wait, are they saying they want cops too dumb to understand basic gun safety laws? This will backfire the first time some cop let in under this law shoots himself in the face by complete accident.

Being over-qualified is definitely a problem. I worked at a job for which I was far above the level of qualification and enjoyed it immensely. In fact, my co-workers appreciated having someone with a higher level of initiation on the job. If the people doing the hiring realized how over-qualified I was, they may not have considered me for the job.

As someone who has been responsible for hiring, I must say that I sympathize with the reasons for shutting out the over-qualified. It is a two-edged sword.

So they want the bottom two thirds of the top half. Smart enough to understand experimentation but not smart enough to create experiments. Sounds pretty much like what I would want in any non-policy setting position.

One would think that intelligence would be a desired quality in the police force. I find it obscene that it is not.

DAILY QUOTE:
"The NATO charter clearly says that any attack on a NATO member shall be treated, by all members, as an attack against all. So that means that, if we attack Greenland, we'll be obligated to go to war against ... ourselves! Gee, that's scary. You really don't want to go to war with the United States. They're insane!"
