(Rubs hands).

I've got a story right over the top of my head. The Mount Athos republic in Greece, an actual existing utopia. Crazy place!

I'm thinking of Orania. A village in the Northern Cape, where a number of Afrikaner are living like in the 19th century, self-segregated from the rest of the country. You've been there. I should dig some details.

Personally, I think the Star Trek Universe version of the Federation
would be a political system we should like.

The Federation seems to be a portrayed as a good combination of Capitalism and Socialism
to where research and innovation are encouraged and rewarded, yet the benefits are
shared by all members of society.

Other alien cultures in that Universe seem to be extremes of individual systems
Klingons are militaristic and expansionist, Ferengi are Extreme Capitalists to the exclusion of benefits to society, The Borg would be close to Theocratic except "The Hive" would be the representation of the 'Greater Good' and 'Higher Power' being served (also quite LITERALLY converting new members) and the show shows the various problems with those extreme positions.

Also depends on whether or not you're talking
about "Pre-Roddenberry" or Post- ....

The nature of some of those societies changes after his death: (Quark of the Ferengi, Hugh of the Borg, Worf, Oto the Shapeshifter who rejects the Dominion, etc....)

Besides, Star Trek PHYSICS is much more entertaining!! 8-)

Explosions in space...
Phaser energy that can be "dodged" even at close range...
Phaser energy where you can visually see the shot coming...

Warp-speed "turns" in space with a crew experiencing "gravity"
without the crew becoming paste on the walls...

The energy of breaking apart matter and re-assembling it, which should
involve splitting atoms, and yet NOT releasing atomic blasts nor requiring
as much energy...

The storing of more information (the electron and atomic state of every particle in an object) than every library book on earth EVERY single time you transport even a small object... AND having the encoding and decoding of that done in real-time...

Ships being damaged in space *without* explosive decompression taking the whole thing out...

and the age-old question: If the soul is housed by the body, are you considered dead while in transporter beam transit?. And if your soul can be beamed -- then is "Ghostbusters" are reality in Star Trek?

and the list goes on 8-)

Nah, just I've given more thought to the physics
than the politics so was able to rattle it off more quickly

In the U.S., "Next Month" (February) is Black-History month so I'm
sure the conversations will go into racism and prejudice anyway.

You're right. I only bashed Texas (http://talk-politics.livejournal.com/1263094.html), even though a surprising few thought it was part of the US.

Political utopia sounds like a contradiction. If you're talking about utopia, you don't need politics!

I just had an idea. For the next monthly topic, I want to see Dystopia in there. Totalitarian states, worst case scenarios, epic social and economic upheval, cultural decay, and nightmarish visions of the future that can plausibly happen.

There's a LOT to work with here. >:D

DAILY QUOTE:
"The NATO charter clearly says that any attack on a NATO member shall be treated, by all members, as an attack against all. So that means that, if we attack Greenland, we'll be obligated to go to war against ... ourselves! Gee, that's scary. You really don't want to go to war with the United States. They're insane!"
