Canada Vs the Ozone Layer

Canada will formally withdraw from the Kyoto Protocol on climate change, the minister of the environment has said,
"Kyoto, for Canada, is in the past, and as such we are invoking our legal right to withdraw from Kyoto," Mr Kent said in Toronto.
He said meeting Canada's obligations under Kyoto would cost $13.6bn (10.3bn euros; £8.7bn): "That's $1,600 from every Canadian family - that's the Kyoto cost to Canadians, that was the legacy of an incompetent Liberal government".
Kyoto has certainly not been what it was hyped to be back in 1997. But for all it's flaws it at least seemed like a step in the right direction. Even without China and the US on board. But now with Canada backing out whatever power the Kyoto Accord might have had takes another blow.
Not that Canada's record on the environment has been sterling lately. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/science-environment-16075719
Under the Copenhagen Accords they're playing follow the leader with the US. Given how well that sort of thing tends to play in Canadian politics I'm more than a little amused by that. And the fact that Mr. Kent's comments remind me that I can always take comfort in the fact that Canadian conservatives are just as nutjob as their US counerparts.
But back to the environment, I think that like it or not we're going to have to very seriously take a look at our environmental goals. Because the old plans just ain't going to happen. Not that I'm not skeptical of the figures that Mr. Kent is putting out. That's another discussion, however.
