One thing kids like is to be tricked. For instance, I was going to take my nephew to Disneyland, but instead I drove him to an old burned-out warehouse. "Oh no," I said, "Disneyland burned down."
He cried and cried, but I think that deep down he thought it was a pretty good joke. I started to drive over to the real Disneyland, but decided to go home instead.
I've brought my Up With the Star ATL to the 1980s. Suffice to say in the alternate Universe as the Fascist Eastern Bloc is degenerating, the Ottoman Empire has now the world's monopoly on oil with US oil supplies running out and Neo-Romanov Russia having enough on its hands ensuring sufficient oil for alternate-universe Russia, the Communist Revolution in Iran, the People's Republic of the Congo, and Indonesia's setting in motion the delightful (from the storytelling perspective) prospect of one totalitarianism imploding on itself just in time for the other one to start rising to power out of the ashes of the first.
Oh, and there's the whole post-atomic horror thing in parts of Central/Eastern Europe......as well as the legacies in the long term of a nuclear war where the only belligerent country not-nuked was Mussolini's Fascist Italy. Not to mention the ultimately impending collapse of the Republic of Sindh (Pakistan as a fascist as opposed to Islamist-nationalist state) and the soon-to-be-written crisis of the Russian state where the Romanov Tsar Alexander IV crushes the Russian Great People's Movement for good and replaces fascist tyranny with a modernized variant of Romanov-style despotism.
that's kind of messed up. otoh, the two brothers @ the end were a crack-up....telling his mom that's probably why she'll get a belly-ache hahahahahahehehe
