I suspect this is a side effect of the "averaging" process... it smooths out any of the irregularities that normal faces have... bumpy skin, not-quite -symmetrical features, patchy coloration differences, etc.

The fact that they all look "staggeringly pretty" maybe tells us something about how much of our idea of "beauty" is negative, rather than positive... i.e. a lack of certain things, rather than positive possession of certain features.

Makes sense when you think about it.

Baring a major blemish or defect most women are not actually ugly, and the process of averaging out the faces is going to mask/remove most of those outliers.

Aside from the too young and the too old a woman generally has to be unhelthy not be atleast marginally attractive.
