Glenn Beck is a genius

On September 28, 2010, political commentator Glenn Beck** will be hosting his "Restoring Honor" rally in Washington DC. While the event is billed as a 'non-political' one, the suggestion that America needs to have its honor restored and the speaker list which includes Sarah Palin automatically make this a political event with Tea Party overtones.

September 28, 2010 is the anniversary of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s "I have a Dream" speech, which he delovered in front of the Lincoln Memorial. Glenn Beck will also be presenting from the Lincoln Memorial. There is nothing racist about Beck's choice of dates. However, there is a very strong probability that some people will find it to be racist. Some folks have been accusing the Tea Party of being racist since its start, and this choice of date is bound to set some of them off.

Glenn Beck Loves this.

I've been reading the Tea Party e-mails, and one of the recurring themes is, "They call us racists! But we are just talking about the economy!" The Tea Party is unified through a feeling of wrongful accusation and oppresion resulting from this accusation. History has shown that these feelings do wonders to motivate groups; resistance movements are some of the most motivated groups out there.

By choosing MLK's speech date for his big rally, it's pretty obvious that Mr. Beck is baiting people to call him and his followers 'racists'. There really isn't any other explanation for picking that date.

I actually do have sympathy for the individual Tea Partiers. In many cases, their anger is justified, and we do need people in this country that will take a stand against excessive government spending. However, manipulative people like Beck have been hijacking that anger and feeding it an aganda that is at times dangerously stupid and counterproductive.

Unfortunately, I'm going to be out of town during Beck's "Restoring Honor" rally. I would have liked to photoblog it for you.

**For those of you who aren't familiar with Glenn Beck, he is a commentator on America's Fox News Network, and one of the leaders of the Tea Party movement. He frequently talks about economic collapse in his program, which is sponsored by a company that sells gold, and Beck has been known to go directly from his gloomy economic forecast into a testimony on why you should buy gold from this company. Here is a random clip of Beck doing his standard routine:
