Two Tea Parties

Now that the Tea Party has taken the plunge to support racism in Arizona, the Party will have the obligatory split over policy. I see a division into two distinct Tea Parties: one of them based on black tea and the other based on green tea. The black Tea Party would continue to support racism (black represents the color of their heart). The green Tea Party will favor a more rational, natural approach to immigration.

What is your opinion of these two parties within the Party? Which other policy divisions can we look forward to?

does an undetermined percentage of supporters for upholding the laws being racist make these laws concerning illegal immigration racist or means they shouldn't be upheld?

The AZ law violates civil liberties. That's why it should not be upheld. Other laws may need to be changed and other met with better enforcement.

But this really is a separate issue from resolving the xenophobia-- if it can find an outlet in immigration laws it will move to some other topic.

'The AZ law violates civil liberties'

So federal law violates civil liberties. Better call Saul.

Federal law would not have me locked up for walking down the street and upon being stopped by the police (perhaps becuase I 'looked like' someone else they were looking for) ending up locked up if I did not have an ID card on me. You are NOT required to carry ID in this country. They have changed that.

Maybe you should read the state law.

It doesn't require you to carry an ID.

And yes, police can arrest you if you refuse to identify yourself in all 50 states during the course of an investigation.

[identity profile] futurebird.livejournal.com 2010-05-17 01:38 am (UTC)(link)
It makes not having ID cause for detainment. That's the same thing in practice.

You can be detained in all 50 states if you don't have ID during the investigation of a crime.

actually, it would (http://arstechnica.com/security/news/2008/10/aclu-23-of-us-population-lives-in-constitution-free-zone.ars)

I'm aware of that and posted about it in the past. I've have seen people pulled off of trains using this 100 mile rule. It's sick.

[identity profile] thies.livejournal.com 2010-05-17 02:28 am (UTC)(link)
so what now, feds are racist or how's this to be spun?

[identity profile] futurebird.livejournal.com 2010-05-17 02:36 am (UTC)(link)
The border patrol person I saw was using racial profiling-- this move it further inland.

I found my old write-up about it.

Immigrants are absolutely required to carry their immigration papers according to federal law. And yes, they are supposed to be locked up if they don't have them on them.

[identity profile] futurebird.livejournal.com 2010-05-17 02:27 am (UTC)(link)
I'm not an immigrant. But I look like one so I guess I'd better carry my paper too or else, right?

[identity profile] geezer-also.livejournal.com 2010-05-17 03:20 am (UTC)(link)
Only if you go to AZ. In L.A. they would direct you to the nearest hospitality center to show you how to get free stuff.

Depends on how paranoid you are. Personally, I carry my driver's license with me even when I'm not driving because I don't want to deal with the hassle of dealing with the police if they felt like hassling me for any reason.
