May the flip-flopping commence

I guess Trump's new con is to just say the opposite of what he has been saying through the primaries hoping Americans all get mass amnesia.

Trump 'blindsided' by Ryan, flip-flops with 'change' on minimum wage

"By the time it gets negotiated, it's going to be a different plan. ... On my plan, (tax rates) are going down. But by the time it's negotiated, they'll go up."

Trump now says that flip flopping, or talking out of both sides of his mouth, is A-OK.... But watch him attack Hillary for any modifications in her message. He's already attacking her for not leaving her husband for his philandering, while expecting no one to remember his own, and his sexist, demeaning comments about women.

"And I don't know how people make it on $7.25 an hour. Now with that being said, I would like to see an increase of some magnitude, but I’d rather leave it to the states. Let the states decide. Because don't forget, the states have to compete with each other", he also said.

If you don't think that people can make it on that pittance, then establish a national minimum wage that people can live on. Then, if states want to go over that, they can. I don't see where else that line of thought can go, unless he wants to say that competition between states is more important than actual people surviving on their paychecks.

There are just literally so many ways he is so full of shit, it boggles the mind.

Next he will say he wants to bring in refugees and the border wall was just a joke.

Donald Trump: London mayor Sadiq Khan could be 'exception' to Muslim ban (http://www.theguardian.com/politics/2016/may/10/donald-trump-london-mayor-sadiq-khan-exception-muslim-ban)

O'rly? I wonder what the king of Saudi Arabia thinks of this. Or maybe the UAE billionaires. Everyone knows they're closet terrorist sympathisers, right?

Guess he lied about being a conservative, after all.

Oh well.

A Trump presidency is sooo going to be awesome.

We've about hit peak-Trump. Sure, if he gets the nomination, we'll have to deal with his blustering until November, but it's all downhill from here. He can't win without attracting the folks in the center, and to do that, he must "flip-flop" away from his incendiary rhetoric. Staying the course with what he's been saying is ultimately a losing strategy, but trying to tack towards the center will destroy him. The crowds he's energized and gotten out to vote are not going to be happy with the more moderate message he's going to have to adopt (they like him only because of the insane things he's said) and the moderates and independents are hardly going to be suddenly wooed by someone who only a month ago was screaming xenophobic racism from his pulpit.

The only folks who might break ranks to vote for Trump are Bernie Bros upset after Clinton gets the Democratic nomination, but I seriously doubt we'll see massive numbers there. I'd expect more to just go third-party, and even then, not enough to save Trump.

The GOP's only hope this time (slim as it is) is to nominate someone else. They need a contested convention so that on the second vote (where the delegates are no longer required to vote for who the people voted for) they can put Cruz or someone less threatening, like Rubio, up there. The problem is, the moment that happens, you're going to see Trump's brownshirts completely lose it, and I would not be surprised to see actual physical violence in the aftermath.

I don't get it. Why should the GOP push for an electable candidacy at any cost? Isn't it better for them to have their cleansing experience through a totally imploded Trump candidacy, have some navel-gazing afterwards, and start anew? Why the obsession to win elections here and now, regardless of the longer-term consequences?

Don't those guys have actual think-tanks to do the thinking for them, for the sake of avoiding tanking?

Well that's the problem innit: you've presented a pretty good argument FOR tanking.

At any cost....

Kind of...it's hard to find middleground here.

Your kids want a pet crocodile...and even though you know its a bad idea - you couldn't get your point across in time (maybe because you picked a pet goldfish in '08 and a pet rock in '12 - and your pet picking duties have pretty much been revoked). So now you have to be the asshole that says no, or the asshole that lets your kids have a pet crocodile....

(a few more drinks and I'll wrap this analogy up....or everyone else can have a few and maybe it will make sense)

Update....

[identity profile] oportet.livejournal.com 2016-05-11 10:48 pm (UTC)(link)
So...new problem. They're on their way back from the pet store with the crocodile (do they really sell those there?).

The bad news is - somehow....you're an asshole for saying no, and also an asshole for letting them have a pet crocodile. It's a lose lose - now you have new choices (they'll probably be lose-lose too)

Accomodate the crocodile - feed it special crocodile food and kiss it's crocodile ass and act like you wanted it all along.

or...

Get your own pet - and give it all your attention - knowing that ultimately, the crocodile is going to eat it (or call it stupid and ugly, then eat it).

Choose wisely....

Now that you've mentioned it, I crave to have a pet crocodile.

Look what you've done!!!

You'd think it would be the logical choice, but so many of them have bought into their own narrative that the American republic (obviously the only bastion of democracy and civilization in the entire world!) will collapse if a "liberal " is elected and western civilization will collapse and we'll all be doomed! (just like they keep predicting before every single election since forever.)

The real conundrum is this: either way, the fringe whackos and Tea Party maniacs will blame the inevitable November GOP loss on the party being "too moderate" and full of "RINOs" and not ideologically pure enough with regards to conservative principles. If Trump gets the nomination, but loses, they'll point to Trump not being a "true" conservative, and move even more to horrifying extremists like Cruz next time. If Trump is passed over for the nomination, then when whoever replaced Trump loses, they'll just say, again, that the GOP is out of touch and "too moderate" for being afraid to run a "real conservative" like Trump. And once again, they'll race to the most extreme fringes to find their next surrogate.

The GOP is living under the thumb of a monster they created (one they started building when they made the deal with the "devil" by making puritanical religiosity a part of their platform.) They are reaping what they sowed, and I'd be loving the schadenfreude if there weren't horrible people, previously too embarrassed to speak or act out in public, so emboldened by the monster currently in the lead. Trump's supporters are literally the brownshirts, and while I have confidence that he will lose any fair election (and lose it badly,) I also have confidence that these thugs will do everything in their power to sow chaos and fear if they think it will help their Dear Leader.
