I suspect this is a side effect of the "averaging" process... it smooths out any of the irregularities that normal faces have... bumpy skin, not-quite -symmetrical features, patchy coloration differences, etc.

The fact that they all look "staggeringly pretty" maybe tells us something about how much of our idea of "beauty" is negative, rather than positive... i.e. a lack of certain things, rather than positive possession of certain features.

I know you're jesting here, but I've known plenty of women who love hairy men that don't look like Zac Efron. The Discovery Channel had a documentary on attractiveness and the biological basis for it (http://dsc.discovery.com/tv-shows/other-shows/videos/other-shows-science-of-sex-appeal-videos.htm). Depending on the time of the month, women either want a lumberjack type (hyper-masculine muscular guys with stubble and beards) to more the more emotional, "twinkish," clean-shaven metrosexual type. Things I never knew prior to watching this: some men's pheromones are so chemically powerful, they can cause a woman to ovulate. And men can detect slight pitch changes in a woman's voice if she is ovulating (the voice's pitch rises).

I don't know. Symmetry is hugely important for attractiveness, and mixing all the faces will tend to wash out asymmetry in individual faces. Hence, better looking.
