... I am thankful that the United States does not have a state religion and the concept of preventing cruel and unusual punishment is at least openly discussed here.

And yet I do recall cases of child and spousal abuse that are committed by people that are supposedly religious. And hey, we do tend to bomb abortion clinics sometimes.
