It doesn't look polished. Makes you look sloppy.

Because generally fashion is about a few key things, one of which is the cut of the fabric; that includes the shape and how close to the body a piece of clothing sits. If panty lines are visible beneath fabric, it disrupts the lines of the garment. So, I would see it as, if panty lines (or any undergarment) are visible, then the person wearing the clothing isn't concerned about the fall of fabric and how it actually looks on them. Fine for gym shorts at the park; underneath evening attire, I would raise an eyebrow.

Still comes back to the part of fashion where you care about how something looks on you; would you want your boss to see your underwear? If not, then choose your clothing more carefully.
