They treat their animals horrifically (they usually work their horses right to death) and have a long history of keeping puppy mills in as equally deplorable conditions as their other animals. There's also lengthy records of child and spousal abuse within most Amish communities.

And no, Kosher operations in particular as bad. I say this as a Jewish woman who learned not to care about kosher meat. Several organizations have condemned halal/kosher meat as an inhumane practice in regards to the animals. Since they basically cut their throat and let them bleed out for several minutes. Some of the worst complaints, however, come from kosher food processing places themselves, where the people who staff them are allowed to work in dangerous and poor conditions, and are paid under minimum wage. Only very recently has legislation come on the table to ensure the workers could perform their jobs in safe conditions and earn livable wages, and this still isn't universal practice by any means.
