In the early 1990's there was an old sociology professor teaching a stat course who didn't allow calculators. Common formulas involve square roots, and students had to use an algorithm to calculate things like sqrt(19). In the late 90's there was a professor who wrote in the greek letters by hand on the otherwise typed exam.
