Obviously. But what I am saying is that the UK was cushioned by the benign influence of the US when it transitioned from superpower to ordinary power. Who will cushion the US, should it decline steeply in the near term?

Not that I think it will. I am pretty sure that in 20 years, barring anything wacky like meteors or SARS, this hand wringing about China and India will look as anachronistic as Rising Sun does today.
