I find many parallels with my country. SA is in a similar situation. After the dismantling of apartheid it'll probably take an entire generation for the old mindsets to go away. So you're right that it's a long process and not just an event. Still, the event should be celebrated on the particular day because this reminds of the long way that has been walked since then.
