Today in the news the scientists believe that the oil has hit the LOOP current and it's heading for the Florida coast and ultimately up and around Florida and along the whole eastern seaboard of the US................ is the oil that precious to us now?????????????????????????????????????????

LOL... that's a brilliant story. And actually, one of my mother's professors in Boston was from Paris, and said that her French was excellent. But your teacher there is right - the Acadians split off from France over 350 years ago, and aside from local colloquialisms, held tight to the original because of fewer external influences.

But I'm also a born-and-raised American. My French is probably as rusty as yours is, if not worse, because nobody speaks French around here and I've not spoken it actively in years. But it's an interesting perspective. My extended family is in Nova Scotia, but my immediate family (mother and sister) are American, living in the USA, and I'm a US Army veteran. Take a guess how much anti-French sentiment I got while I was in the Army with a classic Acadian name like mine. :p

Anyway, yeah, I wonder what's going to happen to the fishing grounds off Nova Scotia. I worry.

Yeah, his family had some interesting stories. He told us that he didn't find out he was a US citizen until he was 18 - when he went to vote in a Canadian election and got turned away because, apparently unbeknownst to their entire family, his family's farm was actually in Maine. And then the IRS came after them for back taxes... such a mess.

Dang, that sucks. Yeah, there was no question of where my family lived. My grandparents were born in Nova Scotia, came to the USA legally and became naturalized citizens. My mom was born in Boston.

But yeah, there are areas of northern Maine that are iffy about the precise location of the border. It's sparsely populated, and has a lot of wilderness. So yeah, I can see how that would happen.

It was annoying, but really, I think everyone ought to have a passport anyway. It doesn't take long to get one, and it's not THAT expensive. They're handy for several reasons, I've found. But yeah, it was annoying when they switched over.

Wait, they actually enforce it? I'd thought it'd go unenforced in some areas (like Canusa St in northern NY, where the left side of the street is Canada, and the other the US).

Those tiny border towns don't really enforce it, but if you want to travel further along the border, or if you're crossing at any significant port of entry, you need it. I'd often cross at Calais, Maine. Sometimes, I'd take the ferry from Bar Harbor or even Portland. For that, you'd definitely need a passport. But the border towns... small ones? It depends on the precise situation.

There's a town that's on the border and they're putting up a gate and enforcing it now, so people won't be able to visit their neighbors any more. The library actually straddles the line so that you enter in the U.S. and browse the books in Canada.

Yeah, I figured. I just thought that with something like that, actually requiring this to cross the border was futile. I mean it's not like anybody'd notice somebody driving through Canusa St., and it's not like these things are so ill-known that a half-intelligent terrorist couldn't find it. *shrug*

I have friends that have ranch near WildHorse Alberta/Montana. Cattle used to graze both sides of the border until 3years ago. 3 winters ago, in the deep of winter, US border control decided to lay down razor wire. And cattle ain't that smart, eh?
