The USSR required no suckering. Once the likes of Khomeini rose in Afghanistan, the threat of another Islamist state south of the border which might start using the Uzbeks to spread Islamism through the USSR was too great a threat to leave unchallenged. The Soviet version of the Domino theory, aided by Soviet-style Communism's antipathy to Islam that was at least equal to its hatred of the Church.
