Yeah, I think that the problem with attributing the rise of totalitarianism to any single cause is that no historical event happens for a monocausal factor, nor do people act for a single reason in practice, whatever they tell themselves. While the point about Hitler, however applicable or inapplicable it may be in 'democratic' terms is utterly irrelevant in the context of the USSR.
