I'm not entirely sure. The USA, after all, fought in the Philippines from 1898-1913, and Vietnam for 25 years, in both cases more for shits and giggles than any actual logic and reason behind it. The USA has yet to fully demobilize from WWII and has not had an actual peacetime economy since the 1930s.
