Douchebags:

http://deadspin.com/5930048/nbc-responds-we-removed-the-opening-ceremony-memorial-to-terrorism-victims-because-the-tribute-wasnt-about-america

So evidently the USA's network that's "showing the Olympics" has decided to only show the version of the Olympics it wants to admit exists. NBC has confessed here to altering tribute to a not-9/11 terrorist incident for the simple reason that the USA didn't have any victims in the 7/7 bombings. To me, this is both appalling and inexcusable, and I really don't have the ability to muster a coherent response because when I'm actually pissed off I don't post well on the Internet about it. >.< Suffice to say that this may be the singularly most dickish thing that the US media's done in a while to me. >.<

I don't have very many words about this, as I said, though I do wonder how people would actually have the balls to say something this disgusting these days. Terrorism is not less meaningful because it's blowing up people in Bumfuck, Nigeria, as opposed to the Big Apple. Treating it as though it is....>.<

You just wait to see our (http://bnt.bg/) coverage. Sucks beyond comprehension.

to replace the "Abide With Me" memorial performance with a Ryan Seacrest interview of Michael Phelps

There's someone who still cares about Michael Phelps!?

[identity profile] a-new-machine.livejournal.com 2012-07-30 06:29 pm (UTC)(link)
He's still a big deal in the US. I think he's like 1 gold away from the all-time Olympic gold medal record. That's a big deal.

It's not, like, terrorism, but y'know.

[identity profile] luvdovz.livejournal.com 2012-07-30 06:33 pm (UTC)(link)
It's not like he has those super-duper-hyper-mega-ultra-modern swimming panties of his any more, or whatever they're called.

[identity profile] a-new-machine.livejournal.com 2012-07-30 06:34 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, that "shark-based" body suit? Yeah, that could make a difference. I've also heard that he has freakishly long arms, or something, which apparently helps. And hey, he only needs to win one.

[identity profile] luvdovz.livejournal.com 2012-07-30 06:38 pm (UTC)(link)
Believe me, it makes a HUGE difference. Especially when the top competitors are usually crammed within a distance of .10 seconds.

Those were recently banned (http://reachforthewall.com/2009/07/24/suit-story/), before someone had managed to introduce nano-technology.

[identity profile] luvdovz.livejournal.com 2012-07-30 06:36 pm (UTC)(link)
And rightly so. This sport had begun resembling F1... or maybe rocket launching.

!

At least they didn't edit it to make them sound racist.

And were there this many political ads last time? I don't remember being annoyed by them in Olympics past.

Must depend on where you are in the country. I've seen very few... then again, I'm in CA.

[identity profile] telemann.livejournal.com 2012-07-30 07:11 pm (UTC)(link)
No, it's pretty bad. Lots of folks are complaining about that.

[identity profile] mahnmut.livejournal.com 2012-07-30 06:16 pm (UTC)(link)
I wonder if they'll use the "US medal count" metric again, i.e. ranking the countries based on the total number of medals, instead of the officially recognized ranking based on the gold medals, then silver, then bronze.

I guess it'll depend on the total number of medals China will win, because right now they're already leading in the gold medals count.

[identity profile] mahnmut.livejournal.com 2012-07-30 06:18 pm (UTC)(link)
And here (http://uk.eurosport.yahoo.com/olympics/medals.html)'s the temporary medal chart.

[identity profile] nairiporter.livejournal.com 2012-07-30 06:24 pm (UTC)(link)
If China wins both the gold-medal and the total-medal count, that dilemma would not be necessary. ;-)

[identity profile] mahnmut.livejournal.com 2012-07-30 06:26 pm (UTC)(link)
The latter contest will be tighter than the former, I think. But let's see how the swimming and athletics disciplines will proceed.

NBC: images tell it better than words.

I DVR'd the opening ceremony so I could skip through the parts I found less interesting. What did they say about them?

[identity profile] telemann.livejournal.com 2012-07-30 07:10 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, lots of folks are complaining about that. And Matt and Meredeth's inane chatter. And Bob Costa's lame lame jokes and commentary about how poorly some countries teams were doing.

Personally, I wished Samuel L. Jackson was hired by NBC, his Twitter coverage of the games is a joy (he'd have to clean his commentary up for broadcasting purposes, however ;) I rather watch BBC coverage anyway. NBC's got too many commercials.

That's what I love about the Olympics, are these sports that hardly ever get the time of day. And the uniforms for the opening ceremonies, and the personal achievement of so many over so much misfortune. Sorry to gush about the games, but I love the Olympic movement.

I have to admit, I have not watched even one second of the Olympics. There are not many things I care less about.

[identity profile] mickeym.livejournal.com 2012-07-30 09:25 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, man, I'm glad to see this comment. I was thinking I was the only one who doesn't really care/isn't watching.

I'll just leave this here

What? Is there some sporting event going on that I really don't give a shit about?

How the Grinch stole the Olympics.

[identity profile] notmrgarrison.livejournal.com 2012-07-31 09:10 am (UTC)(link)
And they showed the British celebrating that they were going to win some medal in gymnastics instead of showing the Japanese gymnast do his routine. They had to show his routine on replay.

[identity profile] sophia-sadek.livejournal.com 2012-07-31 04:23 pm (UTC)(link)
NBC? Isn't that the organization that is connected to Microsoft? Why does this not surprise me. I suppose they are wooing the Faux News audience.

[identity profile] telemann.livejournal.com 2012-07-31 06:16 pm (UTC)(link)
Nope. Not connected to MS.
