"If Earth is really turning to the East, shouldn't flying to the West be faster?" - A question I recently read around these Internets.

Reminds me of that Saudi cleric who said that if a plane stops in one place in the air, China would come on its own and there was no need to waste fuel for flights.

Tidal locking is a biach, yo. How the hell does that devilry work!?

So... if we are traveling in a train and I suddenly jump off my seat, would the person sitting in front of me crash into me, hmmm?

I think you mean inertia. Tidal locking is something else. (Although both are definitely "a biatch") :D

I remember a chapter in that XKCD book a while back answering the question, "If the whole Earth's atmosphere suddenly stopped in place, rather than rotating with the planet, what would happen?" The answer was something like "massive superstorms and total environmental collapse!!!!!"

Awww yeeeeah!

Isn't tidal locking caused by two bodies synchronizing their inertia?

Not really. It's caused by the larger body slightly deforming the mass of the smaller body over time, slowing its rotation. So it is caused by a force that is opposed to inertia. Once those two bodies are tidally locked, their inertia is not "synchronized" in any sense -- they're two different masses in two different places, still orbiting each other.

If the atmosphere wasn't rotating with the planet we would be forever facing a thousand mile per hour west wind.

This is how my science teacher explained it to us in 10th grade. Imagine you are in a car travelling 55 mph. Imagine you have a baseball and you toss it straight up in the air. To your eye, the ball will travel straight up, then fall straight back down. This is because you, the ball and the air in the car are all starting with an equal momentum, 55 mph hour, and are all travelling in the same direction. However, a person watching you from a stationary position outside the car would be able to see that the baseball really did move in a parabolic arc forward. This is kind of what the Saudi cleric is missing in his analysis. (Among a plethora of other thing, tbh.)

The only time I've ever seen a cleric be useful for anything (except perhaps perpetuating religion) is in RPG games when he/she inexplicably heals wounded party members through divine intervention and/or magic spells.

That's right - it took agnostic gaming fiction to make clerics useful. :D

My 10th grade science teacher was an ordained Presbyterian minister.

FWIW.

Psalm 19 was his favorite psalm. If God is the author of creation, there can be no contradiction between science and revelation, only a lack of perfect understanding. This is hardly a novel concept.

Agreed. But there sure is a whole lot of disagreement over where the evidence of understanding should come from. :)

Only among the ignorant, and there is plenty of ignorance on both sides of this question.

That may be so. But I think it's a false equivalence, given that only one side is invested in promulgating lies.

To promulgate a lie implies a knowledge that what you are saying is untrue, it implies deception.

I would never accuse someone of that without evidence. It's kind of a discussion killer.

Good point. And if I was engaged in a debate with, say, a creationist, or someone who generally felt that the assertions in a holy book deserved equal standing as evidence to the assertions in a biology or geology textbook, I would probably not declare that they were spreading lies. But I would be thinking it.

I think your reasoning would be faulty then, assuming your opponent is arguing in good faith.

It's that very assumption that is so troubling.
The first person who declared "God judges your every move" was either a self-aware liar or deranged. The people who took that statement as gospel and spread it, are only technically liars if they can perceive the lack of evidence behind that gospel and are troubled by it. Nevertheless I would still describe their activity as spreading lies, the same way a person who is not visibly ill can still spread disease.
